Material construction and printing

Z-Select 4000D combines a 3.2 mil white coated direct thermal paper facestock, a 0.8 mil acrylic adhesive layer and a 2.3 mil, 40 lb. semi-bleached kraft liner. Total construction thickness is 6.3 mil ±10%. Zebra specifies good print quality at speeds up to 10 inches per second for this material; actual results depend on printer capability, settings and label design.

Indoor labeling applications

Use the 4" x 2" format for product barcodes, inventory identifiers, shipping information, compliance information and work-in-process tracking. Match the layout to the required information and barcode format for your workflow. This paper material has limited resistance to moisture and abrasion and is not recommended for outdoor use.

Temperature and storage

  • Minimum application temperature: -20°F (-29°C)
  • Service temperature range: -65°F to 140°F (-54°C to 60°C)
  • Optimal storage conditions: 72°F (22°C) at 50% relative humidity

The minimum application temperature describes conditions when attaching a label. The service range describes exposure after application, not the temperature at which a label can first be attached. Pre-test adhesion and print readability on the intended surface under actual operating conditions.

Printer fit

Select a direct thermal printer that accommodates the media width, 1" core, 5" roll diameter and material thickness. Check the exact model's media sensing and handling requirements. A printer's nominal print width alone does not establish roll compatibility. These labels print directly using heat and do not use a thermal transfer ribbon.

Exposure limitations

This paper material offers limited moisture and abrasion resistance. Window cleaner, alcohol, ammonia, bleach, IPA, gasoline, grease, oil, acetone, MEK, TCE and xylene are not recommended exposures. Select media designed for harsher conditions when solvent resistance, heavy handling or outdoor exposure is required. Pre-test the labels for the intended application.
